Dealing with layoffs: How companies and CEOs can handle a messy situation with relative ease

One of the toughest decisions a CEO has to take is that of laying off people. The reasons for layoffs can vary but there is a lot that CEOs and C-suite executives can do to seamlessly navigate this difficult moment with sensitivity.

Anshuman Das, CEO, Careernet, says layoffs come in three forms: performance-led layoffs, business-led layoffs and disciplinary layoffs.

In performance-led form layoffs, organisations may implement performance improvement programmes (PIPs) to provide constructive feedback, address compensation issues, provide job rotational opportunities, and ensure effective teamwork to maximise improvement opportunities for an employee before considering a layoff.
