



As enterprises accelerate AI adoption, the demand for Forward-Deployed Engineers (FDEs) is growing rapidly. Combining technical expertise with business acumen, FDEs are emerging as key talent that helps organizations bridge technology and business outcomes. Neelabh Shukla, Chief Business Officer, Careernet, said, “Technical skill on its own won’t get a student there. I’d rather see a student ship one end-to-end AI project than read ten papers about it — hackathons and open-source contributions are a great place to start.” He added, “Employers are increasingly looking for candidates who understand the business context, not just the technical layer.”
Highlighting the importance of customer exposure, Shukla said, “I’d push engineers to actively seek out customer-facing exposure. There’s no substitute for sitting in front of a business stakeholder and watching where the technology actually earns its keep.” He further noted, “The engineers I’ve seen make this shift most successfully are the ones with genuine curiosity about how businesses operate, not just how systems do.” On compensation, he added, “A classic FDE engineer usually commands a 30-40 per cent premium over a traditional engineer in today’s scenario.”
Speaking about the long-term value of the role, Shukla said, “What I find genuinely attractive about these roles is the learning curve. FDEs get exposure to enterprise transformation work, sit alongside business leaders, and build expertise that spans technology and strategy at a pace few other roles offer.” Looking ahead, he added, “AI engineers, solution architects, technical consultants, implementation specialists – most of these roles will likely need similar capabilities as AI becomes core infrastructure rather than an add-on.” He concluded, “In that sense, Forward Deployed Engineering may end up shaping how enterprise technology teams are structured over the next few years.”
